At the Study Center have been organized since 1993 educational programs for all levels of education (pre-school and primary school children, people with disabilities and other special social groups) which are adapted to the interests and the cognitive age level of each group.

The educational programs are aimed at introducing students to all aspects of modern utilitarian ceramics and folk life of the past, but also to familiarize them with the broader Museum environment. They are designed according to the curriculum and are applied depending on the age of the students. Based on the interdisciplinary approach and adapted in the exhibition room where they are implemented, giving, at the same time the possibility for expansion of the educational process outside the school. The educational programs highlight the different aspects of traditional ceramics, by utilizing as a tool, the experiential interactive participation of students.
All educational programs provide students with the opportunity to create their own projects using of clay.

Objectives of the educational programs:

-The approach of clay as a natural element

– Coming in contact with the different aspects of traditional ceramics and folk life of the past

-The promotion of the modern cultural heritage of our country

-The development of skills in students, such as observation, interactive activities and the cultivation of aesthetic education

-The strengthening of the educational role of the Museum

-Familiarization with the Museum’s environment

The Museum’s educational programs for school groups are as follows:

Getting to know the pottery tradition of my country For students of primary age:

The program introduces the technology of traditional ceramics, the typology and the uses of traditional vessels.

Using the objects as tools, kids discover first hand aspects of everyday life of the past and come to recognize the use of objects through comparison with respective current objects.

Through the game and using clay as a medium of expression, students approach the material. Strolling the halls of the Museum they collect information on the role of ceramics in everyday life of the 19th and 20th centuries.

– Olives, olive oil and pottery

For students of 2nd, 3rd and 4th class

The program is an opportunity for discussion on the importance of olives in everyday life. Through appropriate supervisory material, students draw information about oil production and the beneficial role of the tree in diet. Also, they come to recognize representative types of vessels used for storage and transporting oil and olives.

What are children’s favorite games today and in the past?

From what materials were the games of ancient times and those of today made?

The program attempts to answer all these questions, familiarizing young students with their favorite pastime – playing.

Playing individually or as a group, children use or manufacture toys from clay.

For preschoolers

The program focuses on an experiential approach of clay for the construction of objects of daily use over time and particularly in familiarizing children with the Museum. Children, through dramatic play, decode experientially earthenware traditional kitchen utensils comparing them with modern utensils.

Two programs are implemented daily.

Museum Educational Kits

Getting to know the pottery tradition of my country

The museum educational kit was designed for the purpose of transporting it to schools in remote areas, like the islands and the wider of region. With the educational material it contains it aims to equip those teachers who do not have access to the Museum, to enrich the curriculum of the school familiarizing children with the basic aspects of modern utilitarian pottery of our country.

The museum educational kit is addressed to all primary classes and the teacher can use the material in any way it considers it more appropriate for their team, urging the students to actively participate in the presentation. Borrowing of the museum educational kit is possible for 10-15 days free and is free.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS for PERSONS with DISABILITIES

The Centre supporting its social role seeks to be a space open to all audiences, and in this context implements educational programs for people with disabilities (people with kinetic difficulties, people with hearing disabilities, people with mental disorders, etc.).

These programs are implemented for free upon request with the Museum (tel. 210-3318491/2).

Please note that the Museum is accessible to people with disabilities.

Pottery workshops

Pottery workshops for children aged 5-12 years, are implemented in the Museum on a permanent basis (every Saturday 11.00-13.00).

Through contact with the material of clay the creative imagination and the synthetic ability of children is cultivated, while giving the opportunity to participate in the construction, decorating, baking and glaze of their own ceramics works.

Creative Workshops

From October to June, during weekends are implemented in the Museum, for children aged 5-12 years, creativity workshops e.g. Mosaic workshop with the theme “Pottery meets mosaic», Movement and Expression workshop on “Feelings”’, Narratives of fairytales, Educational performances and other activities.
