Irish Wings, Athens! A Celebration of Irish & Greek Ceramics!

Opening on Thursday, October 31, 2024
Irish Wings, Athens!
Modern Ceramics Museum, Athens

Following their exhibition at Saint Carthage Cathedral in Lismore, Ireland, in May-June 2024, at the Old School of Loggos in Paxos in July 2024, and at the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely, Ireland, in August 2024, eight distinguished Irish ceramists—Isobel Egan, Sinead Fagan, Jane Jermyn, Ann McBride, Marcus O’Mahony, Eileen Singleton, Kathleen Standen, and Bernadette Tuite—will present their works alongside their Greek counterparts—Giorgos Vavatsis, Mirka Drapaniotou, Manos Kalamemios, Charoula Koropouli, Iosifina Kosma, Ifigeneia Tsirou, and Ilias Christopoulos—at the Modern Ceramics Museum in Athens from October 31 to November 16, 2024.

The inspiration for this endeavor stems from their artistic encounter during an exhibition at the Paxos Irish Festival – Irish Wings 2023, titled “Greek and Irish Ceramic Art in Paxos” (Old School, Loggos, July 14 – August 8, 2023). Since 2017, the Irish Wings Festival, under Kathryn Baird’s direction, has successfully presented contemporary Irish musicians, poets, writers, and artists in Paxos, attracting an enthusiastic audience, including the Irish Ambassador to Greece.

This is the first exhibition of contemporary Irish ceramics in Athens, offering a unique opportunity for both the Greek public and the Irish community in Athens to explore the complexity and variety of form, texture, color, technique, and expression in contemporary Irish ceramics. The exhibition fosters a creative dialogue between the Irish and Greek artists.

The Modern Ceramics Museum in Athens is a museum, educational, and research organization dedicated to contemporary ceramics, housing the Center for the Study of Modern Ceramics, the foundation of G. Psaropoulos. It holds the largest collection of modern Greek ceramics and is located in one of the most beautiful parts of old Athens, in the Thisio area, in a characteristic neo-classical building from the late 19th century with an internal courtyard, a representative example of the architecture of the time. The museum is located near the archaeological Kerameikos site, which continues to be a place of ongoing research and rich ceramic findings, making it an ideal exhibition space for this purpose. The contemporary works of the fifteen participating artists will be showcased alongside the museum’s collection of exhibits.

This exhibition will highlight both the contrasts and unexpected connections between the works, where folk art and tradition coexist with more modern approaches, creating a lively, enthusiastic dialogue between different island cultures.

The historical journey of contemporary Irish ceramics will be presented at the museum through an illustrated lecture in both English and Greek by Irish ceramist Jane Jermyn on Monday, November 4 at 8:00 PM.

The exhibition is co-curated by Nikos Liaros, Christoforos Boikos, and Jane Jermyn.
