Exhibitions of the Centre for the Study of Modern Ceramics

The Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery hosts temporary special exhibitions with items sourced from the institution’s unique ceramic collections. The Museum also hosts exhibitions of ceramics by contemporary artists, aiming to foster interaction between traditional and modern pottery-making.

The museum's permanent collections

The Museum’s permanent collections showcase Greece’s ceramic production from the 16th to the 20th century.

In the museum’s introductory room, visitors can explore the history and technology behind ceramics, learn about the stages and techniques of clay construction, discover the various types and uses of pottery, and gain insight into the customs associated with ceramics.

In the storage jars room, visitors can see large containers (pithoi) from all over Greece, dating from the 16th to the 20th century. Extra educational material on the production of such pots, made without the use of a wheel, are also available here.

The foot-operated wheel room features a reconstruction of a pre-industrial pottery workshop, where visitors can learn about the various forms and uses of traditional pottery.

The museum’s atrium is dedicated to the construction of containers (pithari) in Crete. Visitors can learn about the organization of potters in guilds, the layout of their workshops and the special procedure behind making Cretan jars with a turntable operated by hand (known as the “trochi”). Crete’s traditional pottery-making is a living cultural heritage element and has been included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Greece.
