The Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery is an institution that develops a wide range of multi-disciplinary museum, learning, and research activities. The institution aims to collaborate with other organizations and engage in networks, extending its activities “beyond the walls.” To this end, the museum organizes and participates in ceramics festivals.

Pottery-making activities in Thrapsano, Heraklion

The Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery works closely with the Thrapsano Cultural Association and the local potters of Thrapsano. Since 2015, the museum has been actively involved in the Potter’s Festival, organizing pottery-making workshops and learning programs for adults and children.

The strong connection between the people of Thrapsano and their land, as well as their passion for their craft, led to the establishment of the EARTH WATER FIRE pottery festival in 2019. The cultural events are co-organized by the Thrapsano Cultural Association, the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery and the British School at Athens (Knossos Research Centre).

The EARTH WATER FIRE festival, takes place annually in early July, in Thrapsano, Heraklion. It features a wide range of pottery-related activities, including workshops for adults, children’s programs, demonstrations of special pottery-making techniques, talks, guided tours, documentary screenings, and more.

Participation for the public is free of charge.
